With the advancements in cosmetic procedures, achieving the fabulous body, you have always dreamed of is more than possible. Liposuction, also known by various other names such as lipectomy, liposculpture suction, or lipo, is a form of cosmetic surgery, which breaks and then sucks the unwanted fat in areas such as abdomen, buttocks, neck, thighs, chin and upper and back part of the arms and calves. During liposuction, the fat is removed with the help of hollow instrument and powerful vacuum.

Liposuction — A procedure for weight loss

Contrary to popular belief, liposuction is not a treatment for obesity. It is rather one of the most effective means of doing away with body fat. It doesn't remove cellulite or stretch marks on the body. It is rather suitable for those patients who want to improve the contour of the body. This process helps in permanent alteration of the shape of the body, but in case the patients don't follow a healthy lifestyle, there is a risk of gaining unwanted fat again.

Besides these benefits, there are also some risks involved in liposuction, which one should be aware of. These include numbness, infection, and scarring. Also, if a greater amount of fat is removed, it may lead to lumpiness and dents on the skin surface.

Benefits and Risks of Liposuction

Though liposuction is known to offer many benefits, the risks are intertwined with it. Some of these are listed as follows:

1. Liposuction can enhance the shape as well as the contour of the body, but it has a gradual healing process than most other aesthetic surgeries. The resulting bruising may last for about three weeks.

2. Liposuction may help in complete removal of lipomas, which are benign fat tumors in certain parts of the body.

3. It is also useful for gynecomastia where men develop excessive fat tissue in the chest. But liposuction may lead to numbness in certain parts of the body even though it is temporary.

4. The results of liposuction are immediate, in the majority of the cases. One can experience an enhanced body contour, within a day of the surgery. If you can ignore swelling which tends to last for a few weeks, the enhancements and desirable results are almost immediate. However final result comes after three months.

With these few facts in mind, if it is suitable you can opt for liposuction and reap the benefits.
